At the end of a fresh autumn day, and a soothing soak, I go through my usual head to toe moisturizing routine. I realise that my skin, usually soft and primed with my favorite moisturizer, is dry and cracking. Oh yes, that’s a sure sign winter is here!
Winters in Johannesburg are cold and dry, skin and hair parched and delicate. If I don’t adapt my routine, my hair will break and my skin will crack. Sound familiar? Don’t waste any time and take action! Here are my steps to keeping my hair strands strong and well moisturized.
STEPS:
STEP 1 MOISTURIZE
Moisturize your skin and hair at least once daily
STEP 2 DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS
You may not feel as thirsty as you do in the summer but you need to consciously make an effort to drink lots of liquids, specifically water!
STEP 3 CONSUME FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Consume fruits and vegetables that are in season in your region to create delicious, healthy soups and smoothies
STEP 4 STAY AWAY FROM HEAT
Stay away from heat styling and be aware of intense indoor heat that adds to drier skin and hair
STEP 5 DEEP CONDITION
For soft, moisturized hair, deep condition your hair every after 2 weeks
STEP 6 SILK SCARF
Rock your silky scarf alone or as protection under a hat.
**Hats soak up the moisture and oil applied to hair, and the wool snags and tangles hair in its fibers, contributing to the construction of those pesky single strand knots
STEP 7 OIL TREATMENT
Make time for an oil treatment at least once a month
STEP 8 SPRAY BOTTLE
Keep a water spray bottle handy to use throughout the day
**Remember, if your hair is dry and brittle you will not retain length even though your hair will continue to grow as normal. There is no evidence that the hair cycle changes with the seasons. If you are losing more hair than usual in winter, or failing to retain length, it’s likely due to your hair breaking.
