SUMMER TIPS for Healthy Locks

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

I am so excited to bring you the first FroSense blog!

The endless days of summer are upon us, and like everywhere around the world, temperatures are scorchingly high. Most of us are familiar with tips for keeping cool and avoiding the adverse effects of too much sun. How many of us know that protecting our heads from the damages of UV rays is just as important as your sunscreen?

Here are some tips for avoiding the potentially disastrous effects of extreme sun exposure:

1. SPORT A HAT

Avoid being out in the sun without a hat to protect your scalp and hair. A sunburn leads to scarring and can damage the hair follicles, resulting in no hair growth in the affected areas. Typically the crown of your head is the most vulnerable. Often, damage is not immediately visible until it's too late, and you are dealing with 'monk' balding on the top of your head.

2. STYLE SMART

Summer is the time for you to rock your protective styles. Make sure your braids are lose, exposing less scalp, and tuck in those vulnerable ends! Avoid styles that expose your scalp if you are planning to spend time out in the sun (Lol, maybe that is why we are blessed with thick curly fros in countries with many hours and days of intense sunshine).

3. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Start with hydrating your body. Listen to your thirst, and act accordingly. As you’re sipping your summer spritzes and chilled rosés, remember to drink a sufficient amount of water to remain adequately hydrated! Don't forget your hair!! Keep a small spray bottle handy to spritz your hair when you can. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, or carrier oil, to lock in that moisture, and keep you hair smelling and looking fresh.

4. AVOID FRYING YOUR HAIR

The damaging effects of heat on delicate cuticles can be similar to the damage that results from overuse of high heat flats irons and blow driers. So, apply a little heat protectant to your hair to minimize damage. Don't forget the ends of your hair will need a little more TLC.

5. BEWARE OF CHLORINE AND SALTWATER!

If you are a beach or pool bum, remember to thoroughly rinse your hair when you're done. Apply a light oil to coat your hair strands. This coating will act as a protective layer, minimizing the harsh effects of pool chemicals and salt.

6. EAT HEALTHY!

Healthy hair begins with healthy food choices. Summer is a great time to munch on readily available fresh, wholesome food. As my grandmother and mother always said:

"Keep your plate colorful and you'll have all the nutritients you need!"

Stay tuned for some of our favorite yummy summertime recipes!

Happy summer :)

Till next time - tata!
